PHOENIX--Dr. Don Covey today announced the launch of his campaign for the Office of Maricopa County School Superintendent. As the former Superintendent of the Creighton Elementary School District and recipient of Arizona Superintendent of the Year, Covey has long been recognized for his action-driven leadership, vision and ability to bring together a diverse constituency and increased student achievement.
“I will be responsible to the people of Maricopa County and expect to be held accountable for fiscal responsibility, providing effective services, and vital resources to our schools,” Covey stated. “I really have just one major goal: improve student achievement. I’ll work with the people of this county to develop the vision and resources that support this goal.”
Covey has also served in top-level administrative positions in the Phoenix Union High School District as its Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services. He was one of the originators of Phoenix Special Programs & Academies, a distance learning educational services company. He currently sits on the National Board for Kids at Hope, which is dedicated to changing the perception of “Kids at Risk” to “Kids at Hope.” Covey has been a long-time member of the Arizona State Council for North Central Association on School Improvement and Accreditation. His work with participatory site based management, resulted in being selected as National Administrator of the Year.
Dr. Covey is confident that he can “increase the trust and confidence” of voters in the Maricopa County School Superintendent’s Office. A Republican, Covey plans to be on the Primary Election Ballot on September 2.
The life-long educator promised to establish a “Council of Advisors” representative of the diverse communities throughout Maricopa County. The Council would provide in-depth advice on the responsibilities and challenges charged to the Maricopa County Superintendent of School’s Office. He is committed to working closely with educators and parents through existing educational organizations. Covey is also firmly dedicated to resolving the obstacles associated with increasing student achievement for all students in the County.
His wife of 42 years, Marge, passed away in 2002. He has three children and seven grandchildren who continue to inspire his call to action. Covey states, “The timing is right for me to give back to my community and apply the knowledge and practical experiences I have gained. We must increase student achievement and success for all students—no exceptions.” FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

I work in the Creighton School District and was hired there during Dr. Covey's administration. I believe him to be a quality candidate for this position and will support him at the polls.

I have work in the Creighton School District for 21 years and remember Dr, Covey as a man who had a vision and a plan to go with it. He was extremely intelligent and encouraging to a young teacher. I am extremely happy to see him running for office.

I have known Don Covey since I was a kid and lived down the street from his family. I went to school with his daughter, Jan. What a wonderful husband and father he is! I am a democrat but I am voting for Mr. Covey. Jessie Houtz
